The Confederation of African Football has endorsed Asian football President Sheikh Salman as its preferred candidate, during this year’s FIFA presidential elections. The Bahrain national was in Rwanda, during the opening of this years African nations championship. Africa’s decision, which was taken after an executive committee meeting in Rwanda, comes as a big boost to his campaign. The FIFA elections are turning out to be a two horse race between UEFA secretary General Gianni Infantino and Sheikh Salman. But with Africa’s 54 nations behind him, Salman will feel confident going into the February 26th vote. Initially, Africa had been expected to back its own candidate South African Tokyo Sexwale. Fifa was thrown into turmoil last May when President Sepp Blatter, who is currently banned from the game, stood down after winning a new term in office following corruption allegations.
