Nigerian Ex-president Jonathan mentioned in $1.3bn deal

Nigeria’s former president Goodluck Jonathan has denied involvement in a 1.3 billion dollar deal involving oil giants ENI and Shell. Italian prosecutors have alleged that the former president and his oil minister received kickbacks but have not brought formal charges yet. Nigeria’s anti-corruption agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, has recently pressed charges in connection with the same oil block deal. Anti-corruption campaigners view the case as a classic example of graft in Nigeria but also an indication of the difficulty in tackling the problem when it crosses international borders.
