Forest fires in Portugal’s central region have killed at least 57 people and injured dozens more. According to the Interior Minister Jorge Gomes, many of the victims died in their cars as flames swept over forest roads. About 600 firefighters are battling a large fire 150 kilometers northeast of Lisbon in an area called Pedrogao Grande. Strong winds have made it difficult for firefighting crew to get near the blaze. Officials say they fear the death toll may rise even further.
