Reeva Steenkamp’s father Barry Steenkamp, has taken to the witness stand in the second day of Oscar Pistorius’ sentencing. It’s the first time Barry Steenkamp is speaking in court about the death of his daughter Reeva. He was unable to attend the original trial because he was unwell, and instead watched it unfold on television at home. On the first day of the sentencing hearing, Pistorius’ lawyers argued that the double-amputee sprinter was too mentally unwell to serve more jail time. The court must decide on whether there are “substantial and compelling” reasons why the 29-year-old athlete should not be sentenced to a full 15 years’ imprisonment for murdering Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day in 2013, whom he claimed he believed was a burglar at his home.
