The world’s last male northern white rhino, Sudan, has died after “age-related complications.” Officials at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya euthanized the beloved 45-year-old rhino Monday after his condition grew worse. Sudan had a deep infection on his right back leg and had been suffering from bone an muscle degeneration which left him unable to stand.
Poachers have all but wiped out the subspecies. Scientists hope to use in vitro fertilization techniques using eggs from the two remaining females and stored semen from other dead males to keep the northern white rhino from extinction.
