U.S. Mid-term elections: Somalis celebrate Ilhan Omar’s historic win

Perhaps one of the most significant outcomes of the U.S. Midterms for the African continent is the election of the first Somali-American to Congress. Ilhan Omar is a naturalized American citizen. She was born in Somalia but spent much of her childhood in a Kenyan refugee camp. Her family migrated to the U.S. when she was 12, eventually settling in Minneapolis.
