UK Prime Minister Theresa May will trigger Article 50 of the treaty on Wednesday next week. This means the country will formally begin the process of leaving the European Union on this day. Downing Street says it has informed the European Council of its decision. It will essentially begin a two-year negotiation period with the EU, mainly on the terms of its exit. The two parties will also try to reach separate deals on the shape of their future relationship and bilateral trade. The council’s president, Donald Tusk, responded saying the European Union would unveil its “Brexit guidelines” within 48 hours of the formal notification.
