What happens on Chinese New Year’s Eve?

The New Year’s Eve dinner has a theme of “reunion”, where fish is traditionally served and also dumplings, especially in northern China, to signify prosperity. Now according to legend, there was a mythical beast one time called “the Year” and once midnight comes, firecrackers, which are a favorite of the children, are set off to keep away the “Year” for the next twelve months.
